(THE ROLE OF THE MOSQUE AS A CATALYST IN ISLAMIC ECONOMIC REFORM: AN EXAMINATION OF MONEY CREATION)

The issue of money creation in the modern financial system—particularly through fractional reserve banking and fiat money not backed by real assets—has raised numerous concerns from the perspectives of Shariah, social justice, and the economic sustainability of the ummah. Although academic discourse on this matter is expanding, the role of the mosque as an agent of change remains largely untapped. This article highlights the strategic role of the mosque as a catalyst for Islamic economic reform, focusing on its potential to educate the public, promote intellectual discourse, and raise awareness on the issue of money creation. Using a qualitative approach through literature review and content analysis of Friday prayers’ sermons the study proposes that mosques be repositioned as progressive centres for Islamic economic education. The findings suggest that, with the support of credible scholars and competent mosque administration, mosques can play a vital role in fostering a critical understanding of the exploitative nature of the current financial structure and in laying the groundwork for an economy rooted in the principles of maqasid al-shariah.
